I think I always wanted to be a journalist growing up – the whole busy newsroom and "hold the front page" thing. Probably because I watched the Christopher Reeve Superman films lot as a kid. Not the second one though, Terence Stamp terrified me.
I remember my very first journalism lecture at university. The tutor introduced himself, listed every major music magazine he'd worked on, and ended with "and if there were any jobs in the industry I wouldn't be stood in front of you".
I realised pretty quickly that if I wanted to write for a living, it wasn't going to be in a 1970s Metropolis newsroom after all.
